About the Tip Calculator
In the US, a tip of 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service at sit-down restaurants, with 20% or more for excellent service. Many diners tip on the total including tax because it is simpler; the difference is usually small, a few cents to a dollar on a typical meal.
A quick mental trick for 20%: move the decimal one place left and double it. For $86.40, 10% is $8.64, so 20% is about $17.28. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount to itself.
Check your receipt for an automatic service charge, which restaurants often add for large groups; if it is already there, an additional tip is optional. For itemized bills where people ordered different amounts, use the split bill calculator instead.
Formula
Tip = (Bill − Tax) × Tip % ÷ 100
Total = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ Number of people
Leave the tax field empty to tip on the full bill. When rounding is on, the tip absorbs the extra cents so the total is a whole-dollar amount.
Example calculation

- Total with tip: $101.95
- Tip per person: $7.78
- Effective tip on the full bill: 18%
