About the Discount Calculator
Retailers advertise discounts in two ways, "25% off" or "$15 off," and sometimes only show a crossed-out price next to a sale price. This calculator handles all three, so you can see exactly what you pay and what fraction of the price you are saving.
Comparing deals is easier in percentages: $15 off a $40 item (37.5%) is a much better deal than $15 off a $150 item (10%). Most US states charge sales tax on the discounted price for store coupons, though manufacturer coupons can be taxed on the pre-coupon price in some states.
For stacked discounts such as "40% off, then an extra 20%," use the percent off calculator. Results are estimates.
Formula
Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount % ÷ 100)
Sale price = Original − Dollars off
Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100
Sales tax, if entered, is applied to the discounted price: Sale × (1 + tax rate).
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Calculate = Sale price from a percent off
- Original price = $80
- Discount = 25%
the calculator returns:
- Sale price: $60.00
- Discount: 25%
- You save: $20.00
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 25% off?
Multiply the price by 0.75. $80 × 0.75 = $60, so you save $20.
How do I find the discount percentage?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. ($80 − $59.99) ÷ $80 ≈ 25%.
Is tax calculated before or after the discount?
For store discounts, sales tax is normally applied to the reduced price.
