About the Sales Tax Calculator

US sales tax is set by states, counties, cities and special districts, so the rate at the register is often a combination. Five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon) have no statewide sales tax, though some Alaska localities charge one. Combined rates elsewhere commonly range from about 4% to over 10%.

Use the reverse mode to back sales tax out of a receipt for expense reports or bookkeeping. A common mistake is subtracting the rate from the total (multiplying by 0.9275); the correct way is to divide by 1 plus the rate.

Many states exempt or reduce tax on groceries, prescriptions or clothing. Check your local rules; results are estimates.

Formula

Tax = Price × Rate
Total = Price × (1 + Rate)
Price before tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate)

Example: $100 at 7.25% has $7.25 tax for a $107.25 total. A $107.25 receipt divided by 1.0725 gives back $100.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • I know the = Price before tax
  • Amount = $100
  • Sales tax rate = 7.25%

the calculator returns:

  • Total price with tax: $107.25
  • Price before tax: $100.00
  • Sales tax: $7.25

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. For 8% tax on $50, the tax is 50 × 0.08 = $4 and the total is $54.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. $54 ÷ 1.08 = $50 before tax.

Is sales tax charged on shipping?

It depends on the state. Some tax shipping charges when the item is taxable, others do not if shipping is listed separately.
