About the Split Bill Calculator

Splitting a check evenly is quick, but it is unfair when one person orders a salad and another orders steak and two cocktails. This calculator charges each person for what they ordered and spreads tax and tip in proportion, which matches how tax is actually applied and keeps the tip fair to everyone.

Enter each diner's items as one subtotal from the receipt, in any order. Put dishes everyone shared, such as appetizers or a pitcher, in the shared field so they are divided equally. The table shows exactly how much of the tax and tip each person covers, which makes settling up through a payment app easy.

The "split evenly" figure is shown for comparison, so the group can choose whichever method it prefers.

Formula

Each person's share of the subtotal sets their share of tax and tip:

Share = Person's subtotal ÷ Bill subtotal
Pays = Subtotal + Tax × Share + Tip × Share

Shared items are divided equally and added to everyone's subtotal before the proportions are calculated.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Each person's food & drink subtotal = 24.50, 31.00, 18.75, 42.25
  • Tax on the bill = $9.86
  • Tip = 20%

the calculator returns:

  • Each person pays: $31.47 · $39.82 · $24.09 · $54.28
  • Bill total with tip: $149.66
  • If split evenly instead: $37.42

Frequently asked questions

What is the fairest way to split a bill?

Have each person pay for what they ordered plus a proportional share of tax and tip, and split shared dishes evenly.

Why split tax and tip proportionally?

Sales tax is charged as a percentage of each item, and a percentage tip works the same way, so proportional shares match what each order actually cost.

How do I handle a coupon or discount?

Take the discount off the subtotals of the people it applies to (or spread it evenly across everyone) before entering the amounts.
