About the Unit Price Calculator

Bigger packages are usually, but not always, cheaper per unit. Sales on small sizes, multi-buy promotions and "shrinkflation" can flip the math. Dividing price by quantity puts both items on the same footing so you can compare them instantly.

Many US stores print a unit price on the shelf tag, but they do not always use the same unit for competing products (one tag per ounce, another per count). Enter the numbers yourself and pick a unit you can apply to both. For paper towels or toilet paper, compare price per sheet or per square foot rather than per roll, since roll sizes vary widely.

The cheapest unit price only saves money if you use it all before it spoils or expires.

Formula

Unit price = Price ÷ Quantity
Savings % = (Higher unit price − Lower unit price) ÷ Higher unit price × 100

Example: $4.99 ÷ 24 oz = 20.79¢ per oz and $7.49 ÷ 40 oz = 18.73¢ per oz, so the larger package is about 9.9% cheaper per ounce.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Item A price = $4.99
  • Item A quantity = 24
  • Item B price = $7.49
  • Item B quantity = 40
  • Unit name = oz

the calculator returns:

  • Better deal: Item B is cheaper per oz
  • Item A unit price: 20.79¢ per oz
  • Item B unit price: 18.73¢ per oz
  • Savings with the better deal: 9.9%

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate unit price?

Divide the total price by the number of units. A $6 pack of 12 is $0.50 per item.

Is buying in bulk always cheaper?

Not always. Compare unit prices: sales on smaller sizes or coupons can make them the better deal.

How many ounces are in a pound?

There are 16 ounces in a pound, so multiply pounds by 16 before comparing with an item sold in ounces.
