About the Number to Words Converter
Writing a number in words is required on checks, legal contracts, invoices and some forms, where the spelled-out amount guards against altered digits. It is also useful for teaching place value, writing style guides that spell out numbers, and creating invitations or certificates.
This converter uses American English: no "and" inside whole numbers (one hundred one, not one hundred and one), "and" only before cents on checks, and the short-scale names in which a billion is a thousand million. On a check, write the amount starting at the far left of the line and draw a line through any unused space.
Formula
Numbers are split into groups of three digits from the right. Each group is read as "x hundred y" and followed by its scale word:
1,234,567 → (one) million, (two hundred thirty-four) thousand, (five hundred sixty-seven)
Numbers from 21 to 99 that are not multiples of ten are hyphenated (sixty-seven). Digits after the decimal point are read one at a time, and on checks cents are written as a fraction of 100.
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Number = 1234567.89
- Format = Words
the calculator returns:
- In words: one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven point eight nine
- Number: 1,234,567.89
