About the TV Size to Viewing Distance Calculator

The right viewing distance balances immersion against comfort. SMPTE (the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends the screen fill at least 30° of your horizontal field of view, a good target for everyday TV and sports. THX suggests about 40° for a cinema-like feel, which works well for movies and gaming.

Resolution sets the closest sensible seat. Normal visual acuity resolves about one arcminute, so if you sit farther than the pixel-limit distance, a higher resolution adds little visible detail. That is why 4K and 8K matter most on large screens viewed from close up. These are guidelines, not rules; personal comfort, room layout and content all play a part.

Formula

Screen width = Diagonal × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²) ≈ Diagonal × 0.872
Distance for a viewing angle θ = (Width ÷ 2) ÷ tan(θ ÷ 2)
Pixel-limit distance = (Width ÷ horizontal pixels) ÷ tan(1 arcminute)

A 65 in TV is 56.7 in wide. For a 30° field of view you sit 56.7 ÷ 2 ÷ tan 15° ≈ 106 in (8.8 ft) away; for 40°, about 78 in (6.5 ft). On a 4K panel, a person with 20/20 vision can just resolve individual pixels at about 51 in (4.2 ft).

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Calculate = Viewing distance for my TV
  • Screen size (diagonal) = 65 in
  • Resolution = 4K UHD

the calculator returns:

  • Mixed use (SMPTE 30°): 8.8096 ft
  • Cinematic (THX 40°): 6.4855 ft
  • Closest distance before pixels are visible: 4.2265 ft

Frequently asked questions

How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?

Roughly 6.5 to 9 ft (2 to 2.7 m). Closer gives a more cinematic view, and a 4K picture stays sharp down to about 4–5 ft.

What size TV should I get for a 10 ft viewing distance?

About 74 in for a 30° SMPTE view and up to about 100 in for a 40° THX view, so a 75–85 in TV is a popular choice.

Does 4K let me sit closer?

Yes. A 4K screen has pixels half as wide as a 1080p screen of the same size, so you can sit about half as far away before seeing pixel structure.
