About the Pace Calculator

Pace (minutes per mile or kilometer) is how runners and walkers think about speed, because it maps directly to splits on a watch. Use this calculator to plan a race target, check what pace you need to break a time goal, or convert a treadmill speed into a pace.

Common examples: a 25-minute 5K is about 5:00 per km or 8:03 per mile; a 4-hour marathon needs about 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km). On race day, courses measured along the shortest line are hard to run perfectly, so GPS distances usually come out slightly long; build in a few seconds per mile of buffer.

Formula

Pace = time ÷ distance
Time = pace × distance
Distance = time ÷ pace
Speed = distance ÷ time

Times are converted to seconds and distances to meters before dividing. One mile is 1.609344 km, so a pace per kilometer × 1.609344 gives the pace per mile.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Calculate = Pace (from distance and time)
  • Distance = 5 km
  • Time – hours = 0 h
  • Time – minutes = 25 min
  • Time – seconds = 0 s

the calculator returns:

  • Pace per mile: 8:03 /mi
  • Pace per kilometer: 5:00 /km
  • Time: 25:00
  • Distance: 3.11 mi
  • Speed: 7.46 mph

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace by 1.609. For example, 5:00 per km × 1.609 ≈ 8:03 per mile.

What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?

About 9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometer for the 13.1-mile (21.1 km) distance.

How do I convert treadmill speed to pace?

Divide 60 by the speed in mph to get minutes per mile. 6.0 mph = 10:00 per mile; 7.5 mph = 8:00 per mile.
