About the Cubic Footage Calculator for Shipping

Cubic footage is how truckers, movers, storage companies and LTL carriers think about space. It drives freight density, trailer planning and the size of storage unit you need. Always measure the outside dimensions at the widest points, and for palletized freight include the pallet itself and any overhang.

Carriers that bill by volume usually round each measurement up to the next whole inch before multiplying, so your invoice may show slightly more cubic feet than a tape-measure calculation.

Formula

Cubic feet = (Length × Width × Height in inches) ÷ 1,728

There are 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches in a cubic foot. If you measure in feet, simply multiply the three sides. A 24 × 18 × 18 in box is 7,776 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 4.5 ft³, so ten of them take up 45 ft³.

To convert to metric, 1 ft³ = 0.0283 m³, and 1 m³ = 35.315 ft³.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Length = 24 in
  • Width = 18 in
  • Height = 18 in
  • Number of pieces = 10

the calculator returns:

  • Total cubic feet: 45 ft³
  • Cubic feet per piece: 4.5 ft³
  • Total cubic meters: 1.2743 m³
