About the Average Calculator
"Average" usually means the arithmetic mean, but it is only one way to describe the center of a data set. The mean uses every value, so a single extreme number can drag it far from where most of the data sits. The median, the middle value of the sorted list, ignores how extreme the outliers are, which is why home prices and incomes are usually reported as medians.
The mode is the most common value and is the only "average" that works for categories. The range gives a quick sense of spread. Looking at the mean and median together is a fast skew check: when the mean is well above the median, a few large values are pulling it up. For growth rates and ratios, the geometric mean is the better summary.
Formula
Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n
- Median: sort the values; take the middle one, or the mean of the two middle values when n is even.
- Mode: the value(s) that occur most often.
- Range: maximum − minimum.
- Geometric mean: (x₁ × x₂ × … × xₙ)1/n, shown when all values are positive.
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Numbers = 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8
the calculator returns:
- Mean (average): 16.571429
- Median: 15
- Mode: 8 (appears 2 times)
- Range: 38
- Sum: 116
- Count: 7
- Minimum / maximum: 4 / 42
- Geometric mean: 12.897032
- Sorted values: 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of numbers?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 and 8, the sum is 116 and the count is 7, so the mean is about 16.57.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting. Outliers affect the mean much more than the median.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for most frequent, all of them are modes. If every value appears once, there is no mode.
How do I find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the values and average the two in the middle. For 3, 5, 8, 10 the median is (5 + 8) ÷ 2 = 6.5.
