About the Butter Converter
In the US, butter is sold in 1-pound boxes of four sticks, and each wrapper is marked in tablespoons, so recipes often say "1 stick" or "6 tablespoons." Recipes from elsewhere use grams, and some older ones use cups. This converter moves between all of them.
Note that European butter blocks are often 250 g, and some West Coast US sticks are shorter and fatter but still weigh 4 oz. Oil can replace melted butter in muffins, quick breads and brownies, but not in recipes that cream solid butter with sugar, such as most cookies and layer cakes.
Formula
1 US stick = ½ cup = 8 tbsp = 24 tsp = 4 oz = 113.4 g
1 cup = 2 sticks = 226.8 g, 1 lb = 4 sticks
For an oil swap, use about ¾ as much oil by volume as butter, because butter is roughly 80% fat and 16–18% water.
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Amount = 3/4
- Unit = Cups
the calculator returns:

- Sticks: 1.5
- Cups: 0.75 (≈ 3/4)
- Tablespoons: 12 tbsp
- Ounces: 6 oz
- Oil substitute (¾ of the volume): 5/8 cup (9 tbsp)
