About the Recipe Scale Conversion Calculator
Doubling a cookie batch or cutting a family casserole down for two is simple multiplication, but doing it for a dozen ingredients with fractions invites mistakes. Paste the ingredient list, separated by semicolons, with the amount at the start of each item; the calculator multiplies every number and keeps the unit and ingredient name.
A few things do not scale perfectly. Round eggs to whole numbers (or beat and measure part of one), go lighter on salt, spices and leavening when multiplying by 3 or more, and change the pan size rather than the oven temperature. Larger or deeper batches need extra baking time; smaller ones need less.
Formula
scale factor = desired servings ÷ original servings
new amount = original amount × scale factor
Going from 4 to 6 servings gives a factor of 1.5, so 2 1/4 cups of flour becomes 3 3/8 cups. Results are rounded to the nearest 1/8 so they match standard measuring cups and spoons.
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Scale by = Number of servings
- Original servings = 4
- Desired servings = 6
- Ingredients = 2 1/4 cups flour; 1 cup sugar; 2 eggs; 1/2 tsp salt; 1 1/2 tsp vanilla; 225 g butter
the calculator returns:
- Scale factor: 1.5 ×
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a recipe from 4 servings to 6?
Multiply every ingredient by 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5. One cup of sugar becomes 1 1/2 cups.
How do I halve 1/3 cup?
Half of 1/3 cup is 1/6 cup, which equals 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons.
What do I do with half an egg?
Beat the egg and use about half (roughly 25 g or 1 1/2 tablespoons), or round to the nearest whole egg in forgiving recipes.
Does cooking time change when I scale a recipe?
Often. Use the same oven temperature, but check earlier for smaller batches and later for larger or deeper ones.
