About the Dog Food Calculator
Feeding guides on dog food bags give wide ranges that often overestimate needs, and overfeeding is the main reason more than half of U.S. dogs are overweight. Veterinarians start from the resting energy requirement, the calories a dog burns at rest, and multiply it by a factor for life stage and activity.
Treat the result as a starting point. Weigh your dog every two to four weeks and check body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above. Use a measuring cup (or better, a kitchen scale) rather than scooping by eye.
Results are estimates for general guidance and are not veterinary advice. Ask your veterinarian about your own pet.
Formula
RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
Daily calories (MER) = RER × life-stage factor
Cups per day = daily calories ÷ kcal per cup
Typical factors: neutered adult 1.6, intact adult 1.8, inactive 1.2–1.4, weight loss 1.0 × RER at ideal weight, weight gain 1.2–1.8, active/working 2.0–5.0, puppy under 4 months 3.0, puppy 4 months to adult 2.0.
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Dog's weight = 40 lb
- Life stage / activity = Adult, neutered/spayed
- Food calories per cup = 375 kcal/cup
- Meals per day = 2
the calculator returns:
- Daily calories: 985 kcal/day
- Food per day: 2.63 cups
- Per meal: 1.31 cups
- Resting energy requirement (RER): 615 kcal/day
- Treat allowance (10%): 98 kcal/day
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does a dog need per day?
A typical neutered 40 lb (18 kg) adult dog needs about 1,000 kcal a day; a 10 lb dog about 350 kcal; and a 70 lb dog about 1,500 kcal.

U.S. pet foods must list calorie content on the label, usually as kcal/kg and kcal/cup (or kcal/can) near the guaranteed analysis.
How many times a day should I feed my dog?
Most adult dogs do well on two meals a day. Puppies under six months usually eat three or four smaller meals.
