VO2 Max Calculator
Estimate your aerobic fitness (VO2 max) from a simple field test or your heart rates.
How to use the VO2 Max Calculator
- Choose the sex.
- Enter the age.
- Choose the test.
- Enter the distance covered in 12 minutes and pick its unit.
- Enter the 1.5-mile time – minutes.
- Enter the 1.5-mile time – seconds.
- Enter the resting heart rate.
- Enter the max heart rate (optional) – Leave blank to estimate as 208 − 0.7 × age.
- Press Calculate. The result updates automatically as you type.
About the VO2 Max Calculator
VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, measured in milliliters per kilogram of body weight per minute. It is the gold-standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness and one of the strongest predictors of long-term health and longevity.
Lab tests on a treadmill with a gas analyzer are most accurate. Field tests like the Cooper run correlate well for people who pace themselves evenly and give a full effort; the heart rate ratio method needs no exercise but is less precise. Warm up thoroughly, and check with a doctor before maximal testing if you have health concerns.
Results are estimates for general information only and are not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before making major changes.
Formula
Cooper: VO2 max = (meters in 12 min − 504.9) ÷ 44.73
1.5-mile run: VO2 max = 483 ÷ time (min) + 3.5
Uth heart rate ratio: VO2 max = 15.3 × max HR ÷ resting HR
Ratings compare your result with an approximate age- and sex-adjusted average; published normative tables differ slightly between sources.
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Sex = Male
- Age = 35 years
- Test = Cooper 12-minute run
- Distance covered in 12 minutes = 1.5 mi
the calculator returns:
- Estimated VO2 max: 42.7 mL/kg/min
- Fitness rating: Average
- Equivalent METs: 12.2
Frequently asked questions
What is a good VO2 max?
For a 30-year-old, roughly 40–45 mL/kg/min is good for men and 33–38 for women. Elite endurance athletes reach 70–85 or more.
Can I improve my VO2 max?
Yes. Interval training and consistent aerobic exercise typically raise VO2 max by 10–20% in previously untrained people over a few months.
How accurate are smartwatch VO2 max estimates?
Most are within roughly 5–10% of lab values for average users, and they are more useful for tracking trends than as an absolute number.
