About the Ideal Weight Calculator

"Ideal body weight" formulas were created mainly for medicine, not fitness: Devine's formula, for example, was designed to dose certain drugs and is still used in hospitals today. They give a single reference weight for a given height and sex, without accounting for frame size, muscle mass or age.

Because they disagree by several pounds, it is more realistic to treat the spread of results, together with the healthy BMI range, as a target zone rather than one magic number. Body composition and how you feel matter more than hitting an exact figure.

Results are estimates for general information only and are not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before making major changes.

Formula

Each formula starts with a base weight at 5 ft (60 in) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that (results in kg):

FormulaMenWomen
Devine50 + 2.3/in45.5 + 2.3/in
Robinson52 + 1.9/in49 + 1.7/in
Miller56.2 + 1.41/in53.1 + 1.36/in
Hamwi48 + 2.7/in45.5 + 2.2/in

The healthy BMI range is weight = BMI × height (m)² for BMI 18.5 and 24.9.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Sex = Male
  • Units = US (ft, in, lb)
  • Height – feet = 5 ft
  • Height – inches = 10 in

the calculator returns:

  • Devine (1974): 160.9 lb
  • Robinson (1983): 156.5 lb
  • Miller (1983): 155 lb
  • Hamwi (1964): 165.3 lb
  • Healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9): 128.9 – 173.5 lb

Frequently asked questions

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

None is "correct". Robinson and Miller tend to give more realistic values for women and shorter people, while Devine and Hamwi rise faster with height. Use the range they cover.

How much should a 5'10" man weigh?

The four formulas give about 155–165 lb (70–75 kg) for a 5 ft 10 in man, and the healthy BMI range is roughly 129–174 lb.

Does frame size matter?

Yes. A common adjustment is to subtract 10% for a small frame and add 10% for a large frame, using wrist circumference as a guide.
