How to use the Stud Calculator

  1. Enter the wall length and pick its unit.
  2. Choose the stud spacing.
  3. Enter the corners / wall intersections – Each adds about 2 studs.
  4. Enter the door & window openings – Each adds about 4 studs (kings and jacks).
  5. Choose the plates.

About the Stud Calculator

Most residential walls are framed with 2×4 or 2×6 studs at 16 in on center, which also lines up with 4 ft and 8 ft sheet goods. Advanced (optimum value) framing uses 24 in spacing, single top plates with aligned framing, and two-stud corners to save lumber and leave more room for insulation, where code allows.

A quick field estimate is one stud per linear foot of wall at 16 in spacing, which roughly covers corners, openings and waste. Use precut studs (92⅝ in for 8 ft walls with a double top plate) to save cutting.

Formula

Layout studs = ⌈Wall length ÷ Spacing⌉ + 1
Studs = (Layout studs + 2 × Corners + 4 × Openings) × (1 + waste %)
Plate lumber = Wall length × Number of plates

The extras are rules of thumb: a corner or wall intersection adds about two studs, and each opening adds about four (two king and two jack studs). Headers, sills and cripples are cut from additional lumber.

Example calculation

Using the default values:

  • Wall length = 20 ft
  • Stud spacing = 16 in on center
  • Corners / wall intersections = 2
  • Door & window openings = 2
  • Plates = Double top + bottom (3)
  • Plate board length = 12 ft
  • Waste allowance = 10%

the calculator returns:

  • Studs needed: 31 studs
  • Layout studs: 16 studs
  • Plate lumber: 60 linear ft
  • Plate boards: 6 boards

Frequently asked questions

How many studs do I need for a 20 ft wall?

At 16 in on center a 20 ft wall has 16 layout studs. With two corners and two openings, plan on about 31 studs including 10% waste.

Why are studs 16 inches on center?

At 16 in, studs land at the edges of standard 4 ft wide drywall and sheathing panels, and the spacing gives good strength and nailing support.

What length stud for an 8 ft wall?

Precut 92⅝ in studs, plus a bottom plate and double top plate (4½ in), give a 97⅛ in wall that fits 8 ft drywall with room for the ceiling board.
