About the Square Yards Calculator
Carpet, padding, sod, artificial turf, landscape fabric and some vinyl flooring are still quoted per square yard in the US, while rooms are measured in feet. This calculator multiplies your measurements and divides by nine so you can compare quotes and order the right amount.
Measure each room at its longest and widest points, including closets and alcoves that will get the same material. For carpet, remember that the roll width (usually 12 ft) determines how much you actually buy, so the carpet calculator may show a slightly larger figure once seams and trim are accounted for.
Formula
Square yards = (Length in feet × Width in feet) ÷ 9
One yard is 3 feet, so one square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet. If you measure in yards, simply multiply length × width. One square yard is about 0.836 m².
Example calculation
Using the default values:
- Length = 15 ft
- Width = 12 ft
- Number of identical areas = 1
the calculator returns:
- Area: 20 yd²
- Square feet: 180 ft²
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square yard?
There are exactly 9 square feet in one square yard (3 ft × 3 ft).
How do I convert square feet to square yards?
Divide the square feet by 9. A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft, which is 180 ÷ 9 = 20 square yards.
Is a square yard the same as a cubic yard?
No. A square yard measures flat area, while a cubic yard measures volume (3 × 3 × 3 ft = 27 cubic feet). Gravel, soil and concrete are sold by the cubic yard.
